Nitrification Inhibition - a Source Identification Method for Combined Municipal And/or Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plants
نویسندگان
چکیده
Inhibition of nitrification at combined municipal and/or industrial treatment plants can cause serve problems in regard to the future low effluent standards for ammonia nitrogen. As inhibition problems often occur only for limited periods anq are caUsed by different substances it is very difficult· to find the sources of these substances within the sewer system. Using a two step strategy based on a respiration test it is possible to locate these sourceswithin ashort time and to concentrate then on the abatement of the inhibi ting wastewaters. The method of the respiration test was developed and the relationship between dilution and inhibi tion could be described by. a new mathematical inhibition model. The method was applied at an Austrian city (Linz) with more than 50% wastewater load coming from industry during the design period for the extension of the existing plant (8!00 000 PE).

Nitrification at full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants: Evaluation of inhibition and bioaugmentation of nitrifiers.
Batch nitrification tests were conducted with sludge and wastewater streams obtained from field implementations to evaluate nitrification inhibition and efficiency of a nitrifiers bioaugmentation technology at full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The results showed that the substrate organic carbon and pH of wastewater streams were inhibitory factors to nitrification and th...
متن کاملSelected Chemoautotrophic Processes in Wastewater Treatment: Low Temperature Nitrification Inhibition by an Azo Dye and Biofiltration for Odor Control of Hydrogen Sulfide
Biochemical processes by chemoautotrophs such as nitrifiers and sulfide and iron oxidizers are used extensively in wastewater treatment. The research described in this dissertation involved the study of two selected biological processes utilized in wastewater treatment mediated by chemoautotrophic bacteria: nitrification (biological removal of ammonia and nitrogen) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) re...
متن کاملModelling of nitrous oxide emissions from an A2/O process treating municipal wastewater
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a greenhouse gas significantly contributing to the greenhouse effect and potentially generated during the biological nutrient removal in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The 3 possible microbial pathways for the N2O production are the incomplete hydroxylamine oxidation, the nitrifier denitrification and the heterotrophic denitrification. The first two, both followed b...
متن کاملA DO- and pH-Based Early Warning System of Nitrification Inhibition for Biological Nitrogen Removal Processes
In Korea, more than 80% of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with capacities of 500 m3·d-1 or more are capable of removing nitrogen from wastewater through biological nitrification and denitrification processes. Normally, these biological processes show excellent performance, but if a toxic chemical is present in the influent to a WWTP, the biological processes (especially, the nitr...
